Question for ladies who have had a D&C

05/24/2012

Belle

UPDATE: Our AC just broke. Give me a fucking break, universe! I’m miserably swollen, sad, sore and now I’m hot. Ugh. <done bitching>

UPDATE #2: AC started working again. Thank you universe for having a shred of compassion. Mr. Husband just weighed me. I have gained 8 pounds since 6 a.m. yesterday. Unreal. No wonder I hurt.

So I am bloated something fierce. I didn’t look pregnant before the D&C, but sure do now. My belly, legs, feet, hands, face, EVERYTHING is swollen and sore. Anyone else have this? How long did it last. I feel miserable. I took a gentle four mile walk this afternoon thinking it would help but it seemed to have made it all worse. Any tips?

I was the same way!!! Hope you feel better soon.

The first time, I felt bloated and miserable for 3-4 days. This time, I only felt bad for a day or two, but pictures show I still looked bloated and heavy a week later. I think it takes 4-6 weeks before all your hormones get back to normal and your body feels completely like itself again — but the worst of it is usually over within a week. Go easy on yourself, Belle. Thinking of you and sending virtual hugs….

Oh Jenny! 4 to 6 weeks? Groan. I just want to feel normal again so I can process what has happened. It is HARD to accept and move on when you feel like a truck hit you.

PS I enjoyed your how to survive a miscarriage post. Today I enjoyed wallowing – I did not shower, do my hair or do my makeup. I spent the day in an old T shirt and paint splattered shorts. This is HIHGLY unusual behavior for me. It felt good. Now, if only some of this water weight would go away.

Oh I’m so happy you read it. I was thinking of you, actually, when I wrote it. I was so sad to read of your loss and it brought back all the pain…that devastating day I found out it was over, the numb days that followed. I wanted to write something about getting through those days. I’m glad you had a good wallow today. You deserve it!

Oh, and you won’t feel this miserable for the entire 4-6 weeks. I promise! And try Midol for the bloating?

I stayed bloated for a while, cramped mildly for 2-3 days and bled for 15 days. Did you have anesthesia?

    • May 24, 2012

I did have anesthesia and a breathing tube. I have not had any bleeding. Some tiny dark black clots and specks, and a chunk of ghastly tissue today that made me gag but otherwise, things in the lower hemisphere are quiet. It’s this intense bloating that is killing me.

I guess I should’ve clarified. I felt less bloated after a week, but I couldn’t wear my normal clothes for about three weeks. My hormones leveled out after about two weeks, but the emotional part was much harder. The worst part was the still feeling pregnant but knowing I wasn’t. Again I’m so sorry for your loss

I don’t remember being bloated more than I was before the procedure. I had mine at 7.5 weeks. The only major thing I remember is it hurting to pee (I had a catheter during the surgery) & cramping on the 3rd day. Though, my memory probably isn’t the hottest – the Vicadin they gave me was a great memory eraser and emotional anasthesia!

    Honestly after my D & C I had a bit of mild
cramping and some spotting. Other than that, nothing. Have you had anesthesia before? It sounds from your story that you were pretty sedated. I remember falling asleep on the operating table and 30 minutes later was completely alert in recovery and remember everything (other than when I was knocked out). I’ve heard of people having swelling after anesthesia (perhaps an allergy?). To help with bloating- drink more water… If it doesn’t I away in a day or so, call your doctor.

However, my D&C wasn’t for miscarriage so maybe the hormonal shift is causing problems too.
Good luck I’m thinking of you. Hug

Be kind to yourself lovely do not try and rush your recovery for some people it takes days for some it takes months. It’s also normal to have good days and bad days.
    Big hugs xxx

I had some bloating and soreness after my D&C and I also cramped and bled pretty good for about 3 days. My doctor advised me to take it easy and basically lay on the couch. Not that walking and being active would harm anything, but he felt like I wouldn’t be up to being too active and to not overdo anything. And the swelling could be a reaction to the anesthesia beforehand. I’ve heard of that happening, too. It typically passes, but after a few days if you’re still sore and swollen, I’d tell your doctor.

    You’re in my thoughts!

I don’t remember having that after mine, but then again I probably blocked out everything I could. I remember sleeping a lot when I came home and sobbing all the time. Maybe drink a lot of water to flush your system out? Maybe you had a reaction to some of the meds they gave you. Hang in there!

I didn’t have that reaction after mine. Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to call your doc and make sure everything is ok–8 lbs sounds like a lot.

I hope you have a great time in Asheville! Such a pretty, fun place.
