Back that data up

I don’t backup my files up.

Confession No. 2:

This is not because I don’t know any better. Quite the contrary. I have had THREE epic crashes that resulted in tons of lost data and later a HUGE bill to recover parts of it.

Confession No. 3:

I am TERRIFIED of losing my photos and blog. Anytime The Big Mac (my computer) starts to drag my heart jumps into my throat thinking that the blue screen of death is one click away.

So my question to you all – do you backup your blog, photos and documents? If so, what do you use? How do you feel about “The Cloud.” I love the idea of being able to access my documents from any computer or device and am leaning towards some sort of cloud backup system but want it to be an automatic process. I am lazy and forgetful and if the little internet robots don’t do it for me it might never get done. Suggestions?

And while I’m here posting boring housekeeping questions… fellow photographers, when you post a photo to your blog, do you watermark it? What is your preferred way to size the image so it looks good on screen but will not print well so folks don’t gank your hard work?

Now I’m worried about never having worried about backing up my data and the sort! Will wait for others’ comments and see what I learn along the way 😉
On an unrelated note, what time is on your side of the world?? Seems awfully early to me, it’s barely 12 pm here!

Lol! It is 6 a.m. here but I wrote this post a few days ago. There are some days that I feel particularly verbose and I write several posts and set them to publish on different days, thereby keeping your feeds from being bombarded by Belle 🙂

Damn, and here I am trying to figure out on a daily basis what the hell to write about…ja,ja Will try it your way one of these days…maybe it’ll be more productive! Btw, once I can get off my butt and get the energy to deal with German language (hopefully very very soon) I will send you some chocolates, which are patiently waiting in my counter!!

We use Carbonite. It runs automatically, and I rarely even think about it. It does take a while to upload all your files the first time, but after that I’ve never noticed it.

I doesn’t back up my blog though. But after accidentally deleting a post a while ago, I’ve had them automatically emailed to me. Of course, if something goes wrong with my account, I’d lose them both.

Funny you should say this. Yesterday I got a REALLY bad Trojan on my laptop & nearly lost everything. And I don’t back up either!!!

Why do we do this to ourselves? We really should know better. I declare this weekend to be the World Wide Back Your Shit Up weekend!

Theres a great Mac program called chronosync, which is what I use. It automatically backs up whatever folders I tell it to (not my whole computer – just the important stuff) and backs it up automatically every time anything in those folders change. I back up to a multidrive external so if one drive goes its mirrored on the other drive. Yup – watermark everything!

My husband takes care of all the technical stuff since the fancy Mac we have is his, technically. He has an external hard drive that he puts stuff on to back it up, though I don’t think he’s very vigilant about it. I know our wedding photos are on there at least. I hope he’s backed up since then since that was 3 1/2 years ago! lol

I think watermarking your photos is a good idea. I’m about to start an Etsy shop, and I’ve been thinking about that as well, and think I’m going to watermark photos for that. Anything you can do to keep your work from getting ganked.

Every day for the past month or so I’ve reminded myself to back up my files (mostly my photos are what I worry about losing) and every time I tell myself, oh, do it tomorrow. I really, really, REALLY need to do it but I’m just too lazy to get out my hard drive and plug the thing in. It doesn’t help that my desk is COVERED in crap and totally unaccessible. Maybe I’ll do it today. Maybe… 😉

I use an external hard drive to back the files on my computer and I use Picasa to upload my photos Google+. I don’t use Google + but they got rid of the online program and turned it into the photo sharing bit of Google +. I wasn’t happy about it. I am making a transition to a Mac and am intrigued with the iCloud business.

i know that carbonite is good for freezing people in and thawing them out later but i am not sure how you would use it to backup a harddrive.

I haven’t done any backing up and now you’ve got me thinking about it. My laptop is getting slower these days. I’m just waiting for a crash.

I have an external harddrive for my computer files. I’ve only started using “the Cloud,” but only for small things. I need to play with it more. I have not backed-up my blog, though, which I need to do. Mel had a post on how to do this, which I need to locate.

I’m a little crazy with backing up but here’s what I do. I have an iMac so I connect an external drive and allow Time Machine (a backup program built into the Mac OS) do a constant backup. My husband and I also pay for CrashPlan which uploads everything on our computers to the Crash Plan servers its not something that we access but if something were to happen to our computers and external drives all of our data could be sent to us through Crash Plan. I do use iCloud with my iPhone and iPad but I use it to be able to access my stuff not really for backup. So that’s what we do at my house. Hope this helps you figure a good backup for you.

I don’t back up my blog. Probably should. Though I do back up all my pictures and things. Pictures I put on disc when I get enough to fill one and I also save to a backup external hard drive. My Hubby is a computer nerd so everything is covered.

I have backed up to our external drive in the past, but you are reminding me to do it again. Thank you 🙂
