Some crappy photos of a living room in transition

Since the Professor and I are stuck staying in Lexington another year I have decided to devote some time and money to sprucing our place up a bit. On Friday I ordered new zinc gray covers for our Ektorp love seat and footstool from Bemz (the best thing to ever happen to Ikea furniture). It will take 4 to 6 weeks for the covers to be made and shipped to our humble abode. In the meantime I’m turning my attention to a few details in the downstairs that have been bugging me.

First on the agenda were our super boring lamp shades. I have scoured the Internet and Anthropologie for months looking for unique lampshades to add just the right amount of color and personality. Unfortunately the only shades I found that remotely appealed to me were at least $80 each – which is ridiculous when the combined cost of my lamps is only $30.

With the help of this tutorial, an inexpensive Ikea curtain panel and a bunch of stinky adhesive I was able to give our lampshades a new look and not spend a fortune I’m pretty pleased with them right now, although I’m considering trimming the tops and bottoms with a little bit of gray grosgrain ribbon. What are your thoughts?

Forgive the terrible photos. It was rainy and gray when I took the before shot, and then dark and 5:30 a.m. when I took the afters. Once all my little updates are complete I’ll take nice shots of the finished room. In the meantime, get used to some low quality, grainy DIY images!

After. Less boring + Euclid begging to be cuddled (she is now purring in my lap as I type this).

The other lamp. The finial on this lamp needs painted and I need to order a piece of glass for our make-shift end table (also on the to-do list).

What to you think: should I add some gray trim to the top and bottom?

I think grey trim would finish the lamps off and tie in the color of your new slipcovers.

personally I think they look great as they are and super nice job by the way! It might be worth revisiting after the new gray covers arrive though.

Love the lamp! I also love the wood piece that you used to create the table the way it is.

The lamps look great! I don’t think that you need to add the trim.

I think your place looks great. The cat really kicks the decor up a notch 🙂

Oh and would love to hear what you think of the ektorp slipcovers, did you order them through ikea or one of the custom sites?

One of the custom sites, actually! We wanted grey and the Ikea grey covers were dry clean only – which does NOT fly with four cats! I’ll be sure to review them once they arrive. Cheers and thanks for stopping by the blog!

I’d leave them — I saw some similar to those at Ethan Allen a few years back (except the shades were rectangle shaped).

    Oooo I love those!

Love what you did there!I would say see when the grey covers arrive and then decide on the grey trim.

I love it!!! I think it will look awesome with our without the ribbon.
