Since the Professor and I are
stuck staying in Lexington another year I have decided to devote some time and money to sprucing our place up a bit. On Friday I ordered new zinc gray covers for our Ektorp love seat and footstool from Bemz (the best thing to ever happen to Ikea furniture). It will take 4 to 6 weeks for the covers to be made and shipped to our humble abode. In the meantime I’m turning my attention to a few details in the downstairs that have been bugging me.
First on the agenda were our super boring lamp shades. I have scoured the Internet and Anthropologie for months looking for unique lampshades to add just the right amount of color and personality. Unfortunately the only shades I found that remotely appealed to me were at least $80 each – which is ridiculous when the combined cost of my lamps is only $30.
With the help of this tutorial, an inexpensive Ikea curtain panel and a bunch of stinky adhesive I was able to give our lampshades a new look and not spend a fortune I’m pretty pleased with them right now, although I’m considering trimming the tops and bottoms with a little bit of gray grosgrain ribbon. What are your thoughts?
Forgive the terrible photos. It was rainy and gray when I took the before shot, and then dark and 5:30 a.m. when I took the afters. Once all my little updates are complete I’ll take nice shots of the finished room. In the meantime, get used to some low quality, grainy DIY images!
