Picture Picture: Georgia Aquarium

Fact: I love aquariums. I am obsessed with all the strange and alien creatures that inhabit our oceans and deeply troubled by the destruction that is slowly, or rapidly depending on your view of time, harming them.

Last year for my birthday the Professor took me to the Newport Aquarium in Newport, KY, where we admired fish and then spent more money than I care to admit and got to meet and pet some penguins. It was magical.

Fact: I LOVE ME SOME PENGUINS! And I very much would like one to take up residence in my bathtub.

In keeping with our tradition of fish for my birthday, this year we meandered through the Georgia Aquarium yesterday. We saw tons of marvelous creatures. Here are a few of my favorite photos.

I am a penguin fanatic. I have a collection of penguin ornaments and it is my dearest dream to feed one one day. I think I love them so much because I adore the juxtaposition of their grace and beauty in the water, their comic waddle on land and their fidelity to one another. I love balance in a penguin relationship and the effort that goes into the care of their young. Your picture of one of these handsome fellows is gorgeous.

Me too! If you are ever in Southern Ohio/Northern Kentucky you must go to the Newport Aquarium and go to the Pet A Penguin exhibit! It was seriously one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced.

Gorgeous photos! I would blow these up and hang them on my wall.

Have you ever been to an aquarium with a ray fish petting pool? That’s a very cool experience. πŸ™‚

I *LOVE* aquariums! I spent most of my childhood wanting to be a marine biologist, but then I discovered that science isn’t my best subject and I’m severely claustrophobic, meaning I will probably have a panic attack if I ever try to go scuba diving. Hubby thinks it’s funny that I can sit in front of a fish tank and be entertained for hours.

I love these photos. I also love aquariums and the Georgia aquarium is particularly cool. And, of course, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you had a fabulous day, and found a way to work something sweet into your diet πŸ™‚

Beautiful photos! I love aquariums too, they’re just so peaceful. But I get a little weirded out walking thru those tunnels with the water surrounding you. I keep looking for little cracks in the glass. LOL! Love the starfish – looks like it’s dancing!

I love love love aquariums AND penguins. One of the things that I HAVE to see before I die is a penguin in the wild. They are so adorable- always dressed up and waddling around. πŸ™‚

Do you scuba dive? CP and I learned prior to going on our honeymoon (the second week we dove in Mozambique) and if you love aquariums, you would love diving and seeing these animals in their own habitat. SO worth it (but not something that you can do while pregnant).

    • October 10, 2012

Ooooh, I have not had a chance to scuba yet, but it is high up on my list of things to do before I die. Did you get to take photos during your dive?

These are beautiful! I’m glad you had such a good time. It’s been too long since we’ve been to an aquarium.
