Leftovers: Smells + Crazies + Parental Invasion II + Travels

This weekend I waged war on our stinky house and my stinky husband. I threw all kinds of stuff out from the fridge, pulled out all the shelves and drawers and soaped them, then put the remaining non stinky items back in along with this Arm & Hammer anti-fridge stink contraption. I also distributed odor absorbing citrus things all over the house, bought odor absorbing trash bags (expensive as all get-out!) and washed out all the trash cans.

The Professor was given a new bar of citrus soap, some unscented lotion and a value pack of Listerine breath strips. Our sheets were washed to remove any trace of the hamster lotion and his clothes were laundered.

This morning things were still acceptable in the house and I did not have to roll the window down while driving us to work so I feel progress has been made! Unfortunately we did not get to, ahem, engage in relations this weekend due to extraordinary stress on both fronts. The poor Professor is in job search hell again. His 1 year contract at UK ends in May leaving him scrambling for work again. This year he his expanding his job search to both academia and industry. The industry search, though, is overwhelming for him. I guess that even though he spent 13 years in school for a Ph.D. no one taught him how to actually apply his skills to industry.

I have spent the weekend dealing with some crazy anxiety. Like back to pre-Prozac levels of anxiety which is NOT GOOD. The past two nights I have tossed and turned, alternating between sweating and shivering and worrying that my little Chicken is dead. I am going to beg and plead that the midwife at tomorrows appointment at least checks for a heartbeat. I’ll pay cash if she will give me a quick ultrasound. I NEED some peace of mind. As grossed out as I am by internal organs, I really wish I could peak through my belly button and check on the status of things in there. Someone should invent that for us infertiles. I’d pay a lot of money for a little window to my womb.

On tap for this week is a whole lotta crazy. Today at 9:45 a.m. I am running home to meet a new cat sitter and introduce her to all our critters. Tonight I will furiously sew new covers for our throw pillows in preparation for Parental Invasion Part II that occurs Thursday evening. Tuesday night is grocery shopping for said Parental Invasion. Wednesday evening is sheet/towel washing for all these parents. And then on Thursday heaps and piles of parents will arrive. Actually only two sets, but sometimes two sets of parents can feel like millions!

Friday is the Professor’s commencement ceremony, which we will all attend. Before I got all pregnant and stuff I had planned an elaborate reception for him at our house. Today the elaborate reception has been downgraded to heaps and piles of parents, a few friends, a handful of professors and a table full of horrendously expensive catering from Who.le Foo.ds and a local bakery. Not even a home made cake will happen at this party. Sad stuff, ya’ll, as I’m known for my rocking parties. Hopefully I can redeem myself and throw him a  fantastic “You Got An AWESOME Job” party in a few months.

All of this to say that posts this week will likely be sparse. I will update you on how our midwife appointments go. And I will be reading your blogs because, let’s face it, I’m addicted. Blog reading is sort of like my reality TV but better, because y’all are real and I often get to meet you during my travels! Which brings me to my next leftover: we’ll be journeying to San Francisco soon! I’m already planning to meet up with Stork Chaser and would LOVE to meet up with any other bloggers in the area. Perhaps we could plan a big dinner or something? If you are in the area and interested in meeting up, shoot me an email and we’ll arrange dates/times! Belle.Hineman{at}yahoo{dot}com!

Two sets of parents is a LOT of parents! And your party still sounds great 🙂 You are pregnant! You can play that card or course!!

    When is your next ultrasound?
I thought you were going to get a Doppler, did you change your mind? I’m very happy I got mine, it’s been a week since my last ultrasound and without the Doppler I would have been worried about the baby. Now I know he or she is still fine.
Are all those parents staying until after Christmas or is this visit no related to the holidays? We had been planning to spend Christmas with my family in the Netherlands this year, but then I got pregnant and I’d rather not fly in the first trimester. Funny how that works; the year I finally decided to just start living in the moment and not always think about the possibility of being pregnant next month and basing my decisions on that, I actually got pregnant. I was very close to buying a snowboard season pass too! 😉
Good luck with all the cleaning!

I don’t know when my next ultrasound is. 😦 I am released from my RE but don’t have an OB. I really don’t know what comes next after the RE either. I’m in uncharted territory and, frankly, freaked out. I’m actually borrowing a doppler from a reader. She’s getting it in the mail soon so I just have to wait patiently. I’m also too scared to use it myself before a professional uses one. Can you imagine the meltdown if I can’t find anything? Sheesh, it would be horrible. And good lord almighty, the parents are not staying until after Christmas. I htink I’d run away 🙂 Just for a long weekend for the Professor’s commencement.

Hmm, that does sound scary. I hope your midwife appointments will go well!
They told me that if you opt for the prenatal screening, the ultrasound needs to be done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days – so if you’re doing that you’ll have one soon one way or another 🙂
As for the doppler; I got it on Friday and found the heartbeat right away but could not find it on Saturday. It didn’t freak me out because I just figured I’m not a professional and there are going to be times where the baby won’t cooperate. When I found it again yesterday evening, the baby was in a completely different spot too. As long as you can stay calm and try again in a few hours or the next day, there will still be a net benefit of having the doppler 🙂
Is a commencement the same as a convocation ceremony? I don’t think I’ve heard that term before. Haha a weekend sounds far more manageable indeed. My parents tend to come over for 2,5 weeks at a time and after a few days they always slip back into parent mode which drives me crazy.
Enjoy your week, it sounds like lots of fun things – midwife appointment, parents visiting and a commencement party 🙂

Oh thank GAWD you got rid of some of those stenches!! Hubs’ one year is up at UCSB next May, and he’s now being confronted with being jobless or adjuncting next year. He is not a happy camper about this. When, pray tell, are you coming to SF?? Any chance you might need to hit Hollywood at any point? 🙂 If the timing is right, maybe I could plan a trip up to SF to visit you and Ms. Stork Chaser!

My OB did an ultrasound at my first appointment with them even though I already had 2 done at the fertility doctors. I go next week for my 20 week appointment and it will be my 7th ultrasound!!! They keep me sane!! Caution on the doppler! I would recommend not using until 16 weeks or so. I had trouble finding until then and it caused my undue stress. I find her pretty easily now and I appreciate the reassurance. I always find my HB or placenta echo first and have to look harder for the baby’s HB. She is often VERY LOW close to pubic bone which surprised me. That might have been why I had so much trouble finding her earlier on.

My husband is still in the midst of academic/industry job hunting, and it’s super stressful! I hope you both have a great time with parents, etc., this weekend to relieve some of that stress (along with the stress of preparing for it!).

I think having all the parents together makes it even more crazy and difficult. You sound so busy! I hope your midwife can give you some peace and you have a wonderful week. Congrats Professor!
