Today Sabine and I spent some time at a neighborhood playground. Sabine loves big girls so when two pretty four year-olds came over to play with her she was overjoyed. She clapped and smiled and laughed for them. The big girls thought Sabine was a doll and had just as much fun, if not more. After a while Sabine needed a little “warm milk” (nursing) so I scooped her up and explained that she needed a little snack and that she would be back in a minute. We went over to the bench to have warm milk and the girls followed. When I started nursing Sabine one girl looked astounded and exclaimed, “You are feeding her with your BODY???”
I could not help but laugh, and my Mommy friends started to crack up.
“Yes, I am feeding her milk,” I said.
“You make it with your body?”
“Yep! It’s pretty cool, huh?”
“How long does it take to make it?” she asked.
“Well, it’s pretty much always there and ready to go.”
“How do you make it?”
“Um, well, I eat good food and my body turns it into good milk for Sabine to eat.”
“Some babies have milk from bottles, too.”
“Yep, that’s right. Babies can have milk from bottles or the breast or both.”
It was such a sweet conversation to have and left me smiling from ear to ear. At least until Sabine was done with her milk and the girl asked if I was her Mommy.
“Yes, I am her Mommy.” I said.
“Oh, why are you not at work?”
“Well, I choose to stay home and take care of Sabine.”
“Where is your husband? And why don’t you just have a nanny?”
Oh man, kids today!
