Because I don’t have enough on my plate…

Belle

I have been taking photos of my friends’ children for years. Lately I’ve been doing more and more and three of my friends have been pestering me to start charging. I’m told regularly that I take great photos and that I could make money doing this. I always poo-poo it away and worry I’m not good enough to hack it with the big guys. I’m just a girl who likes her camera and gets lucky shots from time to time.

Last week the Professor and I came to the mutual decision that a car is necessary. Where we live in NY we don’t have great little corner markets within three blocks of us. We are not in dining paradise. We can’t quickly get into the city to run an errand. To get into the city there is a 15-20 minute walk to the train and a 45-60 minute train ride. Once the errand is run I have to frantically seek out a place for Sabine to play so our ride and walk home are not shit shows. Heaven help us if one of us is sick after hours. The nearest walk-in clinic is not accessible via public transit! I could go on but you get the point.

Right now we Zip Car a few times a month for errands but that comes at a high price. The amount we spend in train/bus fare and Zip Cars is pretty close to what we would spend on a car and insurance. There is street parking nearby, too, so we would not have to wait on the ten year parking waiting list at our building, either. (Seriously, 10 years!)

We are reasonable people, though, and are aware cars come with surprise costs like oil changes, new tires, and other such things. We don’t want to stretch ourselves too thin so a car will have to wait until I’m making some money… which is going to be a while longer with personal training. But, I could start offering some simple photography services. Suddenly my friends’ pestering started to sink in. Maybe I could make a little each month taking pictures. I love photographing kids. Why not charge? Then we could afford a car and I could get groceries without it being a day-long production! Such a luxury!

So for the past week I have been putting together a very basic website. Today I launched it and have been plugging myself on some Mommy sites in the neighborhood. Less than 24 hours later and I already have some interest! I’m not sure if this will amount to much of anything. If not, there is no money lost. If it does, fantastic! Who does not need a little extra pocket change?! You can check out the site here.

In other news, my dearest childhood friend is visiting us this weekend. We pick her up at 11:30 this morning and I can’t wait! We’ll be taking Sabine out for a full day of adventures this afternoon and tomorrow morning. Then tomorrow night Sabine and Daddy will fly solo while my friend and I go out on the town and see a Broadway show! I’ll be back next week with details on our weekend and lots of photos. Happy Friday to you all!

Love this idea, Belle! When I first started following your blog many moons ago, I was drawn to your photographs. You are amazing at what you do! I can only hope to one day take photographs as beautiful as the ones you take. And I love your website. Looks pretty, professional, and perfect. Good luck! I hope it works out for you. xo

Love the website! I would also hire you in a heartbeat if I lived closer. My hubs and I own fancy cameras and can’t seem to get a decent photo of our daughter, much less something as stunning as yours! I’m sure it’s more skill than equipment, but what camera do you use???

Nice website! I think it’s a great idea to start marketing yourself and charging for photo sessions. I’ve thought about it myself recently, and you’ve inspired me to get my website in order! I work as a retoucher but went to school for photography, and I miss it.
