Drive Safe

03/27/2015

Belle

The Pigeon is in the hospital having major repairs done after someone backed into me in a parking lot. The other party is also saying I hit them so it looks like we could have a battle heating up, which really sucks because I am not a battle-it-out kind of girl. The Professor, however, will fight until the fiery end and, much to my horror, finds no shame or embarrassment in using whatever techniques necessary.

The worst thing about all this is that the accident happened on my watch and while Sabine was in the car.

Let that one marinate for just a few….

Yeah. Sabine was in the car. Thank God it was a low impact accident and thank god we are all ok but still, the horror of realizing you just had a car accident and your CHILD is in the backseat is unsurpassed.

The accident happened Wednesday afternoon after I met Robin and her kiddos for a playdate at the Nature Center. We were heading out to meet up for lunch and I was feeling great (despite having a cold). Spring was in the air. My sweet little girl is walking and has started talking. I was going to lunch with a friend which is quite rare these days and then BAM. Reality check.

I’m just sick that this happened. The expense is a bummer and the mark on my finally clear driving record is really lame. More sickening, though, is what a wakeup call this was for me – car accidents can happen to anyone no matter how careful you are. The blink of an eye can bring everything we know to an end and, ultimately, we have very little control over it.

I don’t write this for sympathy about our bum luck, or for advice on how to battle the insurance, but as a reminder to drive safe and never take things for granted. Especially when our sweet little babies are in the backseat.

Don’t back off. I think the professor is right, Insurance companies can cheat you and make you pay till you drop your underpants in mercy. No joke, not to mention the mark on your record and an extra premium on insurance and (worst case) a police record .. The other person is battling you to avoid these very things, so stay firm.
Am glad you all are safe, Was the impact bad enough to warrant a change of car seat for Sabine? Usually, they recommend a new car seat after an accident since the old one could be potentially damaged in the impact and be no longer safe.

Secondly, if you were the car moving and he was backing out of his spot, he loses straight away because you have right of way, not him. I hope it was not the other way round!

I was just going to say this! You had right of way!!!! Don’t let her tell you that YOU hit HER, it is HER responsibility as the car coming out of the spot to look around at her surroundings before backing out. AND I know you weren’t going that fast and I saw the dent in her car, she probably didn’t look at all and just zoomed in reverse right as you were coming around. Ridiculous! I’m sorry you are dealing with this, Thank Gd it was in the parking lot when you were going slowly and everyone is all right.

If the accident was severe enough to cause damage to the vehicle, Sabine’s car seat should be replaced too. The plastic can have stress damage that’s not visible but cause the seat to fail in a second collision. Better safe than sorry 🙂

Yikes. We were in an an accident where a truck decided to merge, put on the blinker and then merged into my car scraping the whole side from back tire to front. He asked, didn’t you See my blinker. Didn’t matter, in washington moving traffic has the right of way. He didn’t want to report it, we did anyways and he was at fault 100%. So it only matters who has the right of way.

So glad you are ok, I would be a disaster too after an accident with my baby. I don’t know about there – but here when an accident happens in a parking lot they say both people are at fault. Hope that is not the case with you – and the car seat companies all say to replace the seats no matter how minor the accident.

Sorry, honey! I hope you’re able to get this resolved quickly. Glad you’re both ok. Big hugs!
